Engineering for Coastal Defense
Each army fort cluster consisted of seven interconnected steel towers: a central control tower surrounded by five gun towers and a searchlight tower. They housed up to 265 men for weeks at a time amidst sea spray and howling winds.
During their wartime operation, the Thames Estuary army forts successfully brought down 22 enemy aircraft and 30 flying bombs before being decommissioned by the Ministry of Defence in 1956.
